The Dress of Nations

The Dress of Nations is made up of 6,000 Seed-dresses, textile miniatures made from pieces of recovered garments. The garments were cut, mixed, reassembled, and stitched together on wires. Each of the Seed-dresses has a golden stamp. Over 400 people from different cultures sent the artist a piece of clothing along with a testimonial. A piece of themselves that tells tales of their desires, loves, and suffering. Fragments of cloth that bear countless secrets and dreams of the human condition. These pieces are memories made solid, reminding us that we are each a fragment of another, forcing us to realize just how much we need each other. To accompany the work, composer Marie Pelletier created Voix des nations ("Voice of Nations"), a soundscape inspired by the songs of many cultures..
